Professor Alison Rowlands
Professor Alison Rowlands is Professor of European History at the University of Essex, where she has been researching and teaching the history of witchcraft for more than thirty years. Her work explores why some parts of Europe experienced devastating witch trials while others saw very few, why women were more likely than men to be accused, and how the legacy of the witch hunts continues to shape popular culture today. She was the historical adviser to the Tendring Witch Heritage Trail in Essex and now leads the major research project Witchcraft Politics Across the Sea, which explores the fascinating links between English and German witch trials.
